Historic Jain Temple of Medieval Era

Many religions have flourished in Telangana state, from times immemorial and each religion has left its own legacy, in the form of inscriptions, manuscripts, idols, temples and other historic structures. The region is equally known for its rare Jain heritage.

Jainism, one of the oldest religions in the world flourished all over India and in South India, Telangana region boasts of historic Jain temples and sites, which were unearthed during excavations. The spread of Jain faith here centuries ago shows the multi-cultural and multi religious influence in the region. Kolanupaka, near Aler is home to an ancient Jain temple and statue of Mahavira.

Likewise, Mahabubnagar district in Telangana has been a key center of this faith, hundreds of years ago and in this regard, there has been significant archeological explorations, conducted in the region. The village of Alvanpalli, (Gollathagudi) is located close to Jadcherla Mandal headquarters. The region is home to a rare temple built in large size bricks plastered with lime.

It is a one-of-its-kind brick temple dating back to 7th – 8th Century A.D. It is the only brick temple of Jainism faith which retained architectural features and stucco decorations. The stucco figurines discovered in the excavations exhibit the continuation of the lime plastic art of Amaravati School. The temple has been a subject of study, due to its unique architectural elements, which is different from other Jain sites. The excavations nearby the settlement at Gollathagudiby the Archaeology team has brought to light many Jainism vestiges besides the remnants of a Hindu Temple, belonging to early medieval times.

Jainism sculptures like Mahaveera, Parsvanatha and other objects found here, have been shifted to the District Museum, Pillalamarri, Mahbubnagar as well as the State Museum in Public Gardens, Hyderabad for preservation. The site serves as a great treasure trove of information for explorers, while understanding the rich legacy of the region, especially the rural hinterlands of Telangana.

How to Reach

Alvanpalli (Gollathagudi) village is located about 10 km from Jadcherlatown and nearly 30 km from the district headquarters of Mahabubnagar. It is well accessible by road.
