The Millennia-old Citadel of Khammam

The town of Khammam in Telangana is located on a strategic route connecting coastal areas to North Telangana and north India for many centuries. Here, Khammam fort played a key role when it comes to exercising control over the region.

History

The construction of Khammam Fort started around 950 AD when the region was ruled by the Kakatiya dynasty (10th – 13th century AD). Later, it was the turn of MusunuriNayaks and Velama kings who were involved in the construction of this historic fort situated on a hillock, around which the present day town of Khammam had developed slowly.

The fort was completed in the year 1000 AD and it was under the control of Reddy dynasty. Khammam fort later went into the control of the Vijayanagara Emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya during 1515 A.D.  It was later invaded by Sultan Ibrahim Qutb Shah, the fourth ruler of Golconda Kingdom around1550 AD. Later, it was ruled by four Qutbshahi rulers namely Muhammad QuliQutb Shah (1580–1612) and Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah (1612–1626) followed by Abdullah Qutb Shah (1626–1672) and Abul Hasan Qutb Shah (1672–1689).

The fort was invaded by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1687 A.D and subsequently the fort went into the control of Asafjahi rulers, who appointed a Subedar called NizamMulkiAsalji. The subedar declared independence in 1722 A.D. Zafar-ud-doula was the Tahasildar from 1761 to 1803, under whose control the fort was extensively renovated. The Fort and the town of Khammam went into total control of the Nizam’s during 1800. It was completely controlled by Asaf Jah VII, Mir Osman Ali Khan of the Government of Nizam by the year 1937.

Attractions of the Fort

This fort was built using granite on an area of around 4 square kilometres, along with 10 endpoints. The inner fortification features cyclopean walls at two levels with bastions. It also has a Mosque and a Mahal including the AshoorKhanas built here which was renovatedby NawabShoukat Jung HussamUdDoulah and his son NawabKazim Jung as well as his grandson NawabMohdShabbir Hussain Khan Azm.

Annually, cultural and heritage celebrations are organized here by the name of ‘StambhadriSambaralu’. This fort was renovated during the period of Asafjahis with the help of French Engineers. There is an undated inscription in Telugu prose carved on the stonewall to the right side of the main entrance to this fort.

Khammam fort is located in the heart of the district headquarters of Khammam. Khammam is connected to Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana, located at a distance of approximately 195 km, through road and rail transport.

Khammam Fort is a blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural influences which also celebrated 1000 years of its existence.  Khammam fort holds historical significance not only for Khammam town, but also for the state of Telangana. The majestic fort represents the pride of past rulers atop a hill which represents a blend of various architectural styles.  It has been notified as a protected monument by the Archaeology Department several decades ago and the historical edifice, which once flourished with royal opulence, is known for its alluring charm and the architectural splendour.
