Witness to the History of Bhuvanagiri!

There are many heritage structures in our state that represent priceless heritage and invaluable architecture of the age gone by. The Bhongir fort in Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana is one such massive impregnable structure erected by Chalukya ruler, Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI and the fort has been named after him.  The fort witnessed a glorious period during the rule of queen Rudramadevi and her grandson Prataparudra.

The construction of the fort was initiated by the Chalukyas of Kalyani (10th century A.D.), and later it was subsequently developed and strengthened by the Kakatiyas (12th – 13th century A.D.) of Warangal. The fort witnessed several battles between the Kakatiyas and Gajapathis of Orissa. Later, it passed into the hands of Qutb-Shahis of Golconda and Asaf jahis of Hyderabad (17th- 18th century A.D) The ruins of this fort are of great archaeological significance and they represent the various methods used in construction during that era.

The history of Bhongir fort is traced back to the 10th century. Initially it was called Tribhuvanagiri, renamed later as Bhuvanagiri and eventually it has become Bhongir Fort. The town of Bhuvanagiri/Bhongir derives its name from this splendid fort, which stands on a monolithic rock, which is about 800 feet high.  This is an important fort, which represents the historical significance of Telangana state.

Highlights of the Fort

It is spread across an impressive area of 50 acres over the top of an enormous rock formation. It resembles an unusual egg-shaped structure along with two main entry points that are in turn covered with huge rocks.

The fort that is encircled in a moat has an underground chamber that is believed to be connecting Golconda fort located 50 km away. The fort also has a Hanuman temple and many ponds at the hilltop. There are ruined palaces, gateways, tanks, secret pathways etc. inside the fort. It is considered as one of the earliest forts in the Deccan region.

It is located strategically on an ancient trade route.  The inner walls represent different styles in their construction.

After scaling the highest point, the Bhongir fort offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire region. Visitors here can find impressive collections of armoury, stables, trap doors and other relics of historical interest.
